Learning To Learn
“The capacity to learn is a gift,
The ability to learn is a skill,
The willingness to learn is a choice.”
These are the words of Brian Herbert, an American author, and I couldn’t have said it any better.
I love to learn and love sharing what I have learned from my mentors with fellow horse lovers like yourself.

One of my mentors, Dr. Stephanie Burns, is about to launch the online/virtual version of her legendary in-person program called “Learning to Learn”.
You might remember her from the revamp of the Parelli Home Study Program, or the book “Move Closer, Stay Longer”, or most recently the “Ageless Grit” seminar together with Barbara Schulte.
Dr. Stephanie Burns is an American-born author, researcher, and global leader in adult learning and human behavior who has lived and worked in Australia since 1987.
I am signed up for Learning to Learn and am so excited to find out more about how to improve an existing skill, learn how to get rid of chronic inconsistencies, get rid of bad habits that I’ve spent a lot of time creating, and improve on things that I’ve been avoiding (#flyingleadchanges).
A NOTE FROM LINDA PARELLI
Here is what one of my other mentors, Linda Parelli, creator of the Happy Horse Happy Life program & community, has to say about the Learning to Learn program & Dr. Stephanie Burns’ influence on her life as a learner & coach:
“I can count the people who changed my life on one hand.
Stephanie Burns was one of those fingers – the middle one, I think!
I was privileged to study with her in the 1980s in two life-changing courses for me – Learning to Learn, and Training to Train.
Those courses changed my life as a human and a teacher because she busted every myth there was about learning disabilities and the responsibilities of the teacher. She told me… “Just because you are a confident learner doesn’t mean you can teach others as if they are you!”
Later on, Stephanie played a big role in helping me develop the Levels Program for Parelli Natural Horsemanship. We only did Level 1 and 2, but still today, those are the most revered products in the history of the program because we helped people learn.
I still remember the day during filming Level 1, and Stef grabbed my collar. “Where are you going?” She asked. “To help that student,” I responded.
“You’re too early. They don’t need to learn to do the task; they need to learn how to learn, that difficulties and emotions are part of that journey. Don’t rob them of that. Don’t abandon them, but don’t rescue them either.”
To this day, I feel Stef’s finger in my collar when I’m too eager to help “it” work. It’s not about the task.
Forever grateful to and inspired by Dr. Stephanie Burns
xx Linda”
IS YOUR ANSWER YES?
I am diving into the deep end headfirst because I can’t wait to be a better learner for my own sake, but also because my horses deserve it. Will you join me?
If you answer any of these questions with YES,
- Would you like to learn a new skill but don’t know where to start?
- Would you like to learn a new skill but the thought of it seems just too overwhelming?
- What new skill would you learn if you knew you couldn’t fail?
- Do you ever feel stuck when working with your horse?
- Do you ever think you’re too old to learn something new? Like teaching an old dog a new trick?
- Do you ever wonder why you would want to or need to learn something new?
…then Learning to Learn is for YOU!
★ What is Learning to Learn all about?
The program teaches three things: knowledge about how your brain works, practical learning skills, and strategies for applying those skills in real life. It’s about understanding yourself, learning practical techniques, and developing approaches that make learning easier and more successful.
★ Who is it for?
It’s for anyone who wants to learn more effectively. Effective means learning them deeply enough that you can remember them, apply them confidently, and perform skills automatically without constantly thinking about them.
There have been participants from 14 to 80 years old, including university students, professionals, tradespeople, business owners, people with PhDs, and people without a high school qualification. Everyone has the same brain and nervous system, so the principles apply to everyone.
★ How will Learning to Learn make my life better?
Knowing something and doing something are different skills. Many people understand the theory but struggle to get started or stay consistent. Learning to Learn teaches strategies for initiating action, sustaining it, and turning learning into real progress over time.
Much of modern learning happens independently through online courses, videos, and workplace training. The challenge isn’t finding information; it’s knowing how to manage your own learning, stay consistent, and keep taking action without someone standing beside you. That’s a skill in itself, and it’s something Learning to Learn will teach.

WHO IS ALLAN PARKER?
When you watch the testimonials & interviews where Dr. Stephanie Burns is talking about the Learning To Learn program starting online in September, you’ll meet a guy named Allan Parker, who’s doing the interview. You might wonder who he is and his connection with Dr. Stephanie Burns.
Allan Parker was a participant in Learning To Learn in the late 1980s. He attributes the program with unlocking many issues he had with learning, and in particular reading. He goes on to attribute his following success in building his specialised knowledge and his career successes to that breakthrough.
His biography now reads: Allan Parker, former pro-golfer & ultra-marathon runner turned negotiator for the United Nations across 462 delegates from 192 countries. As a behavioral scientist, Allan Parker remains fascinated by applied neuroscience and has made a lifetime study of micro-behaviors.
Dr. Stephanie Burns has come to know Allan and his work. It was Allan Parker who, by making many requests, was finally able to convince her to take the Learning To Learn program online.
